Kind Digital
About
Our digital design decisions affect people, society and our planet. For better or worse.
We can do better.
Kind Digital is a conversation about learning to do better. By prioritising people’s wellbeing. By making sure we include everyone. By making sure everyone has equal access to information and services. And by protecting people and the planet from harm.

My story
I started working in digital 20 years ago, but for a long time, it didn't occur to me that our industry could have such a negative effect on the wellbeing of the people using our products or our planet.
Fast forward 15 years, I was working for an agency that became certified as a B Corp and I wanted to make sure the products we created were aligned with the same ethical and sustainable values.
I learned about kind UIs, dark patterns, accessibility and sustainable digital. I was fascinated and it changed my whole perspective. But I don't feel good about how long it took me to get here and I still have so much to learn.
Part of trying to do better is getting it wrong sometimes. I’m a UX/UI designer. I’m not an expert on ethics, equity, diversity & inclusion, accessibility or sustainability.
I take great care in researching and writing the information I share and I hope you find it helpful, but before you rely on it, please verify it with a credible source.
I get it wrong
Six pillars of Kind Digital
Paying care and attention to people’s wellbeing. By understanding behaviour and respecting needs, desires, privacy, time and attention.
Mindful
Protecting individuals, society and the planet. By respecting rights and freedoms and rejecting any practice which causes harm.
Ethical
Recognising, respecting and celebrating each other's differences and making sure everyone feels valued and welcomed. By being aware of unconscious biases and ensuring no one is excluded.
Inclusive
Ensuring individuals and groups of individuals are treated equally. By acting to dismantle systems of oppression.
Equitable
Making content and services fully available to everyone, including people with disabilities. By using inclusive design and technology to remove barriers.
Accessible
Protecting the planet and the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. By minimising our negative social, economic and environmental impact.
